Full Time: Holland 2 Brazil 1
A fairytale ending.

1st goal for Holland. An own goal by Melo. 1-1.
(2 July 2010)

What a story! What a goal! What a comeback!

Against the odds, a goal down and feeling the heat. Apparently all those factors did not affect the composure of a bunch of cool Dutch who turned the table and beat the 5-time World champions Brazil in their quarterfinal match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Who could have imagined that arguably the best South American team has bow out of the 2010 Fifa World Cup at the quarterfinal? Yes, they did.

I was awoken by the calls from Keith and Yien Jun at around 9pm as they have agreed to meet to view the match at Macs. I was late. The moment I went down at 9.30pm, it was flooded. Flooded with people of all kinds. Uncles carrying newspapers, teenagers speaking loudly, and of course curious foreign workers (I guess mostly from Bangladesh). The place was at its peak.

Given no choice, I had to stand, with my best buddies, throughout the entire match. True enough, there were so many more Brazilian fans than the Dutch. And mind you, I was wearing the Dutch Orange shirt. Initially, I was quite hesitant to wear that shirt out. Thinking that it might be my first and last time wearing it, I decided to just go for it. It was not a bad decision though.

Then, in the 10th minute, Robinho scored after a well-slotted through pass. Goal! The atmosphere was starting to build up. I was quite disheartened since I din expect such a fast goal. Indeed, everyone cheered, except me! Well, it was that one-sided after all, it gave me a little hope.

Holland 0 Brazil 1

After 35 minutes with shave chances, the Holland managed to survive the half with just a goal down with good saves from the Dutch goalkeeper.

Half Time: Holland 0 Brazil 1

Second half, with a packet of coffee in my hand, was much contented with the Dutch team. They played with more conviction and determination. More entertaining to watch, I must say. They controlled the entire half with much more possession as well. Efforts were paid off in the 53th minute. A free kick from Sneijder sent the Brazilian defence into chaos and there was a mixed up between Julio Cesar and Melo. In the end, Melo headed the goal into his own net.

Holland 1 Brazil 1

Confidence was certainly growing in the Dutch camp. They are passing more freely after the goal since Brazil tries to push up. This might be a crucial blow and soon later in the 68th minute the second came. Well, it was a Dutch goal! It came from a corner which Kuyt flicked on and allowed Sneijder to head in. The Oranje crowd was all on their feet in the screen, so too was the minority supporters at Macs. I shouted, jumped and hugged Keith. It was brilliant!

Holland 2 Brazil 1

Think of a Brazilian comeback? It never happened. In fact, it exacerbated. Melo was caught stomping on Van Persie and the funny-looking Japanese took out his card and it was red! It just wasn't their day given their good start. Brazil down to 10 man, odds are against them now. With due respect, Brazil came close with a series of corners with Lucio closest to scoring their equaliser. It was nerve-breaking right at the end! After 3 long minutes of injury time, it was it! Brazil crashed out of the 2010 World Cup! All the Brazilian hearts were broken, it showed it all on the faces of the players. For the Dutch, it extended their 24-match unbeaten run that sent them into the semi-final in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Final score: Holland 2 Brazil 1

What a match! Now with Holland through, they have to wait to see whether they face Uruguay or Ghana which is playing currently. Now, critics comment that Holland has high probability going to the final on 11 July, assuming they clear their semi-final match.

Anyway, Ghana just scored in the second minute of injury time in the first half! What a superb long-range strike!

Uruguay 0 Ghana 1

So, will the Dutch fairytale continue?

Don't quit!
hang in there!

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

All geared up for MYE!
The reliability of the above statement is zero.

Anyway, (proper) MYE has already commenced with H1 Mathematics yesterday. I don't get it, why PJC decides to put yesterday as one of the exams dates when it is technically still our holidays? Apparently, this question of mine was amplified in today's Straits Times. One mother wrote in the forum and questioned why her daughter's college (JJC) has so many tests during the holidays and disables her from bringing her daughter on a family trip.

Guess what? She went to the dictionary and checked out the meaning of 'holiday' and went to the MOE's website to check out the school holiday schedule. True enough, holidays for JC students starts on 29 May and ends tomorrow. She was not convinced by the college's act since the school should, at all times, comply to MOE's guidelines. I love how she ends off with a powerful and strong statement, 'I urge all schools to give all families a break.'

Speaking of that, MYE is going away soon. That means that break is coming! Hang on guys, it's a battle that is our victory!

Reminder to myself:
28 Jun- H2 Econs P2
30 Jun- H2 CSE P1
1 Jun- H2 Geog P1 (My greatest worry!)
2 Jun- H2 Econs P1
6 Jun- H2 CSE P2
7 Jun- H2 Geog P2 (Another worry!)

Jiayou! :)

Happy Father's Day!
I really love you.

My 17th Birthday
(4 January 2009)

'If today was the last day with your father, what would you do?'
-Gary Wong

I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.

'I love you' for 18 times represents the love for you for the past 18 years.

This evening was a rather thought-provoking dinner with my dear aunt as they headed down to Nanyang for chili crab. Well, just the two of us. You might be thinking? Aren't today Father's Day? Where's my father?

Ans: He's in Hong Kong on a vacation.

Unsurprisingly, the coffeeshop was flooded with people in large groups, most of them with their father. I was extremely amused and fascinated by just how different fathers look, interact and most importantly, where they stand in the family (based on observations). Some fathers are stern, authoritative. Some others, quiet.

What strikes me real hard was how different children interact with their fathers. More than often, they hardly talk. Some played with their phone (what my aunt dislikes about our generation). Some simply stone and wait for the dishes to be served.

It saddens me when such scenes appear before my eyes. The fact that I could not celebrate Father's Day with my father makes this day utterly meaningless. I really hoped that he could join me today and I would willingly spend all my allowances all for this meal. Too sad, he didn't. On the brighter note, everyday could be a Father's Day if we could show our love and concern to them, isn't it?

I came across two videos and thought it would be meaningful to post it today.

I want to dedicate this post to my dearest father.

Dear dad

I am not sure whether I have ever said those 3 special words to you. I guess not. Today is the day where everyone celebrates their day with their 'man'.

You, were my 'man'.
The 'man' who brought me up almost single-handedly for the past 18 years.
The 'man' who gives me whatever I want, whatever I desire.
You are also the 'man' who always cares for me.

Most importantly, the 'man' who is the Best Father to me!

For those that care for me,
I thank you!

Yien Jun's 18th Birthday
(14 June 2010)

I wonder how many people still faithfully follow this blog, whatever the case, I have decided to revive this blog and continue writing. I want to record every part of my life, to record the people that I am in contact with, and simply to look back at those moments I had with people that I love.

Last post was 24 January 2010. So many things have happened between now and then. Happiness and sorrow. Sometimes I guess life is like World Cup (since now is the World Cup fever), you never know what would happen and who would win.

I, may not be the Best family member of the household, Best friend, Best classmate, Best boyfriend, Best student and I realised that. Whatever the case, whether you like me or not, whether you know me or not, or whether you even see me before, I don't mind.

I just want to let the world know that I really love, care and appreciate all of you.

Please, don't just leave me like that.
